Lower Birth Weights for Full-Term Babies

According to a new study to be published in the February issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the birth weights of full term babies in the US has decreased from 1990 to 2005. This finding is surprising since previous studies had suggested the contrary. The birth weights decreased by an average of 1.8 ounces between 1990 and 2005.

Hormonal Contraceptives Offer Benefits Beyond Pregnancy Prevention

Hormonal contraceptives are effective in treating menstruation-related disorders as well as preventing unplanned pregnancies.

A recent publication in the January issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology examines the scientific data supporting non-contraceptive uses of hormonal contraceptives.

In addition the examined date showed that combined contraceptives containing both estrogen and progesterone offer disease prevention by reducing the risk of developing endometrial, ovarian cancer, and colorectal cancer.

American Diabetes Association’s New Clinical Practice Recommendations Promote A1C as Diagnostic Test for Diabetes

The American Diabetes Association’s new Clinical Practice Recommendations call for the addition of the A1C test as a means of diagnosing diabetes and identifying pre diabetes.

A1C is measured in terms of percentages. The test measures a person’s average blood glucose levels over a period of up to three months and previously had been used only to determine how well people were maintaining control of their diabetes over time. A person without diabetes would have an A1C of about 5 percent.

Under the new recommendations, which are revised every year to reflect the most current available scientific research, an A1C of 5.7 – 6.4 percent would indicate that blood glucose levels were in the prediabetic range, meaning higher than normal but not yet high enough for a diagnosis of diabetes. That diagnosis would occur once levels rose to an A1C of 6.5 percent or higher.

First Cervical Cancer Screening Delayed Until Age 21, Less Frequent Pap Tests Recommended

Women should have their first cervical cancer screening at age 21 and can be rescreened less frequently than previously recommended, according to newly revised evidence-based guidelines issued today by The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and published in the December issue of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

American Cancer Society Responds to Changes to USPSTF Mammography Guidelines

“The American Cancer Society continues to recommend annual screening using mammography and clinical breast examination for all women beginning at age 40. Our experts make this recommendation having reviewed virtually all the same data reviewed by the USPSTF, but also additional data that the USPSTF did not consider. When recommendations are based on judgments about the balance of risks and benefits, reasonable experts can look at the same data and reach different conclusions.”

ACOG Statement on Revised US Preventive Services Task Force Recommendations On Breast Cancer Screening

The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) maintains its current advice that women in their 40s continue mammography screening every one to two years and women age 50 or older continue annual screening.

USPSTF Issues New Breast Cancer Screening Guidelines

The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has issued new breast cancer screening guidelines. The task force now recommends against routine mammography screening for women before age 50 years and suggests that screening end at age 74 years. Because the USPSTF found adequate evidence that teaching self-examination is not associated with a decrease in breast cancer mortality rates, the task force recommends against teaching breast self-examination (BSE).

Prenatal Tobacco Exposure Linked to Multiple Neurodevelopmental Problems
